A convicted sex offender died after collapsing with heart problems at a Scots prison.A Fatal Accident Inquiry into the death of Stephen Charters revealed he requested medics not to resuscitate him if he fell ill.The 57-year-old died at HMP Edinburgh on June 19, 2022 after collapsing suddenly in a communal area.Just a few days before, Charters was jailed for a string of sexual offences, including the rape of four women, which took place between 1984 and 2015.
Previously a worship leader, he was convicted following a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh. He was sentenced to five years in prison, and given an Order for Lifelong Restriction, but died just a few days later.The FAI was mandatory due to his death occurring while he was in legal custody, Edinburgh Live reports.
The inquiry concluded his death was not accidental, but occurred due to natural causes. He died following coronary artery atheroma resulting in ischaemic heart disease.
He also had a history of breathlessness and chest pains, consistent with the heart condition angina.He was on cleaning duties when he collapsed at around 9.30am on the day of his death.
