A Scots mum has shared her "proud" experience of being openly queer in the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS).Frances McQuade, otherwise known as Fran, has worked as a firefighter for over six years and currently serves at Motherwell Community Fire Station.
In the last 12 months, Frances has embraced two significant new roles — becoming a crew commander and a mother, both of which bring their unique challenges and rewards.
But through it all, bosses at the fire service say her passion for the job has remained strong and that she values the many open and respectful conversations she has had with colleagues about LGBTQ+ issues.
Frances – who uses she/her pronouns – says her experience as an openly queer firefighter at SFRS has been largely positive. But she’s aware that this isn’t the case for everyone.
