The group were out for dinner and drinks but quickly finished up so they could head down to shore and try to catch a glimpse of the explosion, Edinburgh Live reports.Hamish, from Inverness, said the whole sky turned red as lava could be seen spewing from the volcano even in the distance.Experts warned against travelling to the eruption site as it was releasing toxic gases.Hamish said: "I was having dinner with some of my friends and someone at the table got an alert on their phone that an eruption had started."It took us by surprise a bit.

We finished what we were doing and just got in a car and went down to the shore so we could look over and get a good view. The whole sky was red."It was quite cloudy so it reflected the eruption well.

Even in the distance you could see the fountains of lava. They were very small but you could see them." Join the Daily Record's WhatsApp community here and get the latest news sent straight to your messages. Hamish flew back to Edinburgh Airport on Tuesday.
