An “artificial Sun” that could become a source of unlimited energy has set a new world record by successfully running for more than 1000 seconds.

For decades, scientists across the globe have been attempting to replicate the Sun’s naturally-occurring nuclear fusion in hopes of making a limitless, clean energy source.

Chinese scientists have developed a nuclear fusion reactor, which has now successfully generated a steady loop of plasma for 1,066 seconds at 100millionC – seven times hotter than the Sun's core.

The reactor, dubbed the “artificial Sun” was created by scientists at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), is designed to mimic the fusion reactions at the core of the sun by using hydrogen and deuterium gases as fuel.
