Sainsbury's has removed its buying restrictions on "thousands of products" to help customers shop for vulnerable people who are unable to leave the house.

Supermarkets began to ration popular items as they battled to keep shelves stocked following a wave of panic buying in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

In a letter to customers, delivered on Wednesday, Sainsbury's chief executive Mike Coupe said the supermarket is now lifting restrictions after shoppers told him product limits were stopping them buying items for others.

But not quite everything will be unrestricted quite yet. "We are keeping limits on the most popular items for now, including pasta, UHT milk, antibacterial products and some tinned and frozen foods," Coupe wrote.
