Two food alerts have been issued over a serious infection that can be caused by consuming products contaminated with bacteria.Sainsbury's has urged customers not to eat its Taste the Difference Spanish Chorizo Iberico Ring, which has been pulled from shelves after Listeria monocytogenes was found in some of the products.Symptoms caused by this organism can be similar to the flu, bringing high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea to those infected.

In rare cases, the infection can be more severe and cause serious complications, such as meningitis. It comes amid another warning about Listeria monocytogenes by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS).

The agencies have warned people buying Enoki mushrooms about the possible presence of the bacteria and the risk of severe disease. Those who are pregnant or have weakened immune systems are advised to take care, as they pose a higher risk of being affected.

As the mushrooms can be served raw, the agencies advised shoppers to follow instructions on the packaging, store them in the fridge at 5C or below and to cook them thoroughly before consumption. While there have been no cases of the bacteria being found in Enoki mushrooms in the UK, a number of food safety alerts in the USA and Canada were issued in 2021.If you have already consumed Enoki mushrooms, then you don't need to do anything unless you experience any of the above mentioned symptoms.
