Rishi Sunak diverted an RAF jet to take him to a far-right political festival, The Mirror has reported. The Prime Minister used the taxpayer-funded aircraft to head to Rome.
Downing Street confirmed while Sunak travelled to Teeside via train to campaign in a marginal seat near his home, the jet flew there from London.
He visited the village of Yarm in Stockton South, in a bid to repair the damage caused by claims his Home Secretary, James Cleverly had branded nearby Stockton North a ’s***hole’.The Ministerial code only allows government planes to be diverted for journeys "to or from party business or constituency visits", with exceptions only being made when the time factor is "critical".Even then, it is only allowed when the only additional cost is "the extra flying time needed to carry out the additional landing and take-off".
But in this case, the jet flew to Durham on Friday afternoon and stayed overnight. It then picked the Prime Minister up on Saturday morning for his flight to Rome.
