After his first full year in office, Rishi Sunak is almost guaranteed to face a general election this year. The prime minister started his 2023 with a promise to get the country back on track with five key pledges following a turbulent period for politics the year before.
He now goes into 2024 hoping for a growing economy and that his attempts to crackdown on immigration and bring in further tax cuts will win him enough votes to stay in No 10.
But Mr Sunak is still lagging behind in opinion polls, with Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour party entering the new year with an 18 point lead.
The PM also faces opposition to his flagship Rwanda policy, which is likely to rumble on in the coming months, and has been warned by the Bank of England that interest rates could still be a long way off falling, while families continue to face high household bills.
