Manchester United hero Rio Ferdinand has revealed he ‘came close’ to joining Barcelona after holding talks with the Spanish giants.
The former England international was regarded as one of the best central defenders of his generation after a brilliant career.
At his peak he was the best defender in the Premier League and possibly Europe, and was coveted by the continent’s elite. He became the world’s most expensive defender in 2002 when United paid Leeds United £29.1million for his services.
Ferdinand spent a trophy-laden 12 years at Old Trafford with the peak seeing him captain the club to Champions League glory against Chelsea in 2008.
