He partnered on-loan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat in a double pivot as United held their fiercest rivals to a creditable point.
Mainoo, 18, made his top-flight debut on Merseyside last month when United defeated Everton. He pressed forward his claim for more regular game-time before Erik ten Hag gave the youngster a rest in the final eight minutes.
