Ministers should pump cash into Britain's steel industry to help the sector become more environmentally-friendly, a report urges today.
Investing in factories and mills would also boost the economic fightback from the coronavirus pandemic and deliver on Boris Johnson's “levelling up” election pledge, the study says.
The recommendation comes in a 46-page report, 'A Test of Mettle: Securing a future for a green UK steel industry', by the Common Wealth think tank.
Warning the sector is “at a critical moment”, it says: “There are huge benefits to ambitious action, from more resilient communities to the reduction of imported emissions. “But the sector needs action now. “The future of good jobs, livelihoods, and whole communities are at stake.”
