NME about the new BBC podcast The Rise And Fall Of Britpop – and the chances of a similar cultural phenomenon taking place again today.Launched this week, the new eight-part series sees 6 Music DJ and former NME journalist Lamacq – along with fellow BBC DJ and former Evening Sessions co-host Jo Whiley – delve deep into the rise of UK indie in the ’90s with new interviews, archive interviews and more, featuring prominent artists from the scene.To get a feel for the new series, NME spoke to Lamacq about life before Britpop, how it wouldn’t have been possible without the death of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, the characters it gave us, and what caused the scene’s demise…Lamacq: “The start of the ‘90s was a little grim, grey and downtrodden. The rise of dance music through the late ‘80s and into the ‘90s was a reaction to that – and an escape from that. In musical terms, we had the shoegaze movement in the early ‘90s, which brought some quite good stuff.

Melissa Auf Der Maur has reflected on her past relationship with Dave Grohl, and shared the reasons behind their split.The former Hole and Smashing Pumpkins bassist discussed her past relationship with the Foo Fighters’ frontman in a new interview, and shared what made them part ways despite being “madly in love”.The two dated in the period of 1999 and 2001 – around the same time that Hole released their hit third album ‘Celebrity Skin’ and Foo Fighters released breakthrough record ‘There Is Nothing Left To Lose’, their third full-length album that contained classics including ‘Learn To Fly’ and ‘Breakout’.According to Auf Der Maur, what brought her and Grohl together was the fact they were “both obsessed, committed to rock music” and “non-drug addict, technically happy [and] highly functioning people”.“We were very similar and in many ways, I think our roles in Hole and Nirvana [are] what subconsciously pushed us together,” she said on Sirius XM’s Fierce: Women In Music programme.“I was just leaving Hole [and] entering this sort of like farewell finale tour with the Pumpkins. Dave was just rising up with the Foo Fighters and we had this beautiful compatible couple of years where, I mean, we were madly in love.”She continued: “We also really recognised the turning point we were both at as ’90s musicians that were very close in age, that started very young in our small cool hometowns in Montreal and DX.

Steve Albini has spoken to NME about his time recording Nirvana‘s ‘In Utero’ – as well as working with the “smart, unpretentious, and really funny” Manic Street Preachers.Speaking from his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago, the outspoken Albini – who has also worked on cult and classic records by Pixies, Breeders, Yourcodenameis:milo, Slint and PJ Harvey – said that being forever associated with Nirvana due his work on their 1993 final album ‘In Utero‘ was no albatross.“It’s totally normal, it’s perfectly reasonable,” the producer and audio engineer told NME. “If you had never heard of me before and someone is trying to introduce me to you, they are going to name the famous records that I worked on – and ‘In Utero’ is the most famous.”Albini said that working on the follow-up to the internationally successful ‘Nevermind’ was “fairly normal”, though he ensured that all knowledge of the sessions were kept secret.“There wasn’t anything out of the ordinary about the sessions,” he said.
