Fugees member Pras Michel has been found guilty of conspiring with Malaysian billionaire Jho Low to instigate unlawful foreign lobbying campaigns that sought to influence the governments of two US Presidents, Barack Obama and Donald Trump.The musician was convicted in a Washington court yesterday for campaign finance violations, acting as an unregistered foreign agent, witness tampering and lying to banks. Although he plans to appeal, the conviction could result in years of prison time.The whole thing relates to what is known as the 1MDB scandal in Malaysia.

The legal team of former Fugees member Pras Michel has launched his defense against federal criminal conspiracy charges. His trial was originally scheduled to begin early last November but was pushed back to March 27, apparently due to an unrelated injury sustained by one of his attorneys. Michel is charged with one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States government, one count of a scheme to conceal material facts, and two counts of making a false entry in a record in connection with the conspiracy.

Additionally, Low is being accused of masterminding an international money laundering and bribery scheme that stole billions from the Malaysian state investment fund known as 1MDB.Both Michel and Low are facing charges in the United States, but Low remains at large, so Michel is on trial alone.CBS News reports that DiCaprio, who is not accused of any wrongdoing, testified to a grand jury on Monday and discussed his relationship with Low in a bid by prosecutors to show that Low used stolen money to curry favor with actors, models, and politicians in the United States. According to prosecutors, Low and DiCaprio wereintroduced by the stepson of former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak, who was charged in Malaysia in connection with the 1MDB corruption scandal. DiCaprio recalled to jurors first meeting Low when when he attended his Las Vegas birthday party in 2010.

Submissions were heard by the court in November.By linking to an article in Malaysian online publication The Coverage, Leong was found to have published the story about Lee’s alleged help laundering money from the scandal-hit 1MDB fund on behalf of disgraced Malaysian former Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Elliott Broidy, a prominent fundraiser for President Trump and the Republican Party, has been charged with conspiring to act as a foreign agent after prosecutors said he tried to interfere in an investigation into billions of dollars stolen from a Malaysian wealth fund.  Prosecutors allege that Broidy “facilitated and attempted to facilitate meetings and other efforts to influence officials at the highest level of the United States government, including the president and the attorney general" to drop the probe into 1MDB, an investment fund meant for Malaysia's economic development but which was allegedly utilized as a personal resource by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak's associates.  During a May 2017 meeting in a Bangkok hotel suite,

Malaysian prosecutors have dropped money laundering charges against The Wolf of Wall Street film producer and stepson of ex-Prime Minister Najib Razak in a move slammed by Human Rights Watch on Friday as a "triumph for impunity and corruption." Former Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohamad said he was worried the move could set a precedent in graft cases in which "thieves will be let off if they return the stolen money." Riza Aziz reached a settlement with the government and was discharged Thursday without being formally acquitted, meaning that prosecutors can revive the charge.
