Chris Willman Music WriterChris Stapleton nearly swept the CMA Awards with six trophies in four categories Wednesday night, but the Country Music Association reserved its top prize for Luke Combs, who won entertainer of the year for the first time.“(Presenter) Alan Jackson said my name twice just now,” marveled Combs, accepting entertainer of the year as the telecast slipped across the three-hour point. “i have never written a speech for something like this, which is not serving me very well right now…I don’t deserve to win it, but I’m sure as hell glad that I did.” Combs had premiered a brand new song earlier in the night, “Doin’ This.”It was Combs’ second time at bat for entertainer of the year; last year he lost it to Eric Church.

Luke Combs is going into the 2021 Country Music Association Awards as a performer and three-time nominee. His nominations include the biggest honor of the night, Entertainer of the Year, as well as Male Vocalist of the Year and Song of the Year (“Forever After All”). Luke is already a five-time CMA Awards winner, and his wife, Nicole Hocking, has been his biggest supporter along the way.

Country singer Luke Combs issued an apology to fans after an old music video featuring the Confederate flag resurfaced online.

Luke Combs is acknowledging and apologizing for his past mistakes.The 30-year-old country singer addressed his use of the Confederate flag and imagery in a 2015 «Can I Get An Outlaw» music video during a Q&A for the Country Radio Seminar on Wednesday.«There’s no excuse for those images,» Combs told Maren Morris and panel moderator and NPR music critic Ann Powers, adding that over the years he has «learned a lot» and «immediately» disassociated himself with the imagery.«It's not OK… And as I have grown in my time as an artist and as the world has changed drastically in the last five to seven years, I am now aware of how painful that image can be to someone else,» Combs asserted.
