Emily Longeretta Although Old Dominion and Kane Brown headlined the main stage at the Stagecoach Festival on Saturday, the night definitely didn’t end there. In fact, dozens of festival goers left Brown’s set early to make their way to the Palomino tent to watch Nelly close out the night. The rapper hit the stage with his 40-minute set, performing hit after hit alongside his brother, City Spud. In addition to covering Thomas Rhett’s “Die a Happy Man,” he sang all his greatest hits, including “E.I.,” “Country Grammar,” Ride Wit Me” and “Over and Over,” his 2006 song featuring Tim McGraw — one of the early hip-hop/country crossovers. “Late Night In The Palomino,” as its officially billed, also featured guest Breland who performed his own set on Friday, reuniting with Nelly for their song “High Horse.”

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic The Academy of Country Music Awards nominations for 2023 are led by two of the newer artists in the genre who have crossed the threshold into becoming stars, Hardy, who has seven nods, and Lainey Wilson, who has six. Following close behind with five nominations each were Miranda Lambert, Luke Combs, Kane Brown and Cole Swindell. Lambert is the most veteran of this crop, having won a record number of ACM Awards over the past two decades. Of the nominations they picked up, Hardy and Wilson share a nod in three categories, as the duet they recorded, the domestic violence-themed “Wait in the Truck,” is in the running for song of the year, visual media of the year and event of the year.

Kane Brown can do it all! The 29-year-old country music star is making his acting debut jumping off a train on CBS' hit procedural drama, . «It's really cool,» Brown told ET on the Vancouver set during filming. «I get, like, a superhero moment.» In Friday's episode of the series, Brown plays freight-hopping drifter who leaps into action when the train he's riding on crashes into a party bus.

The CMT Music Awards drew its largest audience ever on Sunday night with 5.43M viewers tuning in on CBS.

Selome Hailu 5.43 million people watched the CMT Music Awards on Sunday night, according to Paramount Global, a 5% increase when compared to the show’s 5.16 million viewers in 2022. This tally comes from a combination of the TK linear viewers who tuned in via CBS and the TK people who streamed on Paramount+. A finalized number including out-of-home-viewing is yet to come, though Paramount currently projects that it will land at 5.68 million total viewers in Live + Same Day. Additionally, the CMT Awards were the most-streamed program of the night on Paramount+, and on social media, Paramount says that the show brought in 2.6 billion potential impressions compared to last year’s 2.5 billion.

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic During the opening monolog at Sunday night’s CMT Music Awards, broadcast from Austin on CBS, there was a comedic bit in which Kelsea Ballerini and Kane Brown exchanged anniversary presents to celebrate their cohosting of the show for the third consecutive time. Brown gave Ballerini a cowboy hat, and she reciprocated by giving him a pink hat to put on in return. At least a few audience members shared a joke about the exchange: By wearing pink, would Brown be breaking Tennessee’s recently passed law that some believe would ban most drag performances in the state, if they were back home? Viewers whose minds went there during that silly opening were just kidding — but Ballerini really went there later in the three-hour telecast, when she chose four “RuPaul’s Drag Race” queens to perform with her as she sang “If You Go Down (I’m Goin’ Down Too).” That song, off her 2022 album “Subject to Change,” is Ballerini’s anthem of female friendship — and, with the way the CMT Awards routine played out, she very much seemed to be counting drag performers as among those friends. The performance was playful and ostensibly non-political, and in a different year might not have raised very many shaved or unshaved eyebrows. In spring 2023, it was hard to read it as anything other than a statement of: If drag queens are brought down, the rest of us will be dragged down with them.
