Sharon Osbourne says she wants her massive donation to the Black Lives Matter movement back. The former reality star, 69, says she donated $900,000 (£807,000) to the anti-racism movement but now wants her money back after Kanye West called it a ‘scam’ in a recent social media post. Sharon – who is married to rocker Ozzy Osbourne and whose daughter Kelly is expecting her first child – said she doesn’t understand the intricacies around Kanye’s anger but believes him that the movement is a scam.

The city of Philadelphia issued an apology Thursday for the unethical medical experiments performed on mostly Black inmates at its Holmesburg Prison from the 1950s through the 1970s. The move comes after community activists and families of some of those inmates raised the need for a formal apology. It also follows a string of apologies from various U.S.

the murder of the rapper PNB Rock has given an interview in order to clear his name.Emmanul Danquah, aka South Side Chief, is a Minneapolis-based videographer and media personality who was involved in two arguments on Instagram Live with PNB Rock last year.The rapper, real name Rakim Allen, was shot while dining in South Los Angeles at the Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles restaurant earlier this month. He died from his injuries the following day, aged 30.Although the arguments and the murder are not related in any way, and Danquah is not a suspect, in the days after Allen was shot they were recirculated online across YouTube and social media, sometimes with titles implying or outright claiming that Danquah was the killer.“I didn’t have anything to do with it,” Danquah said during an interview on the Drea O Show.

The series was first pulled from the Paramount Network’s schedule in summer 2020 in response to nationwide protests against police after the killing of George Floyd, then dropped by the network days later. It was one of several police-related television projects dropped or rewritten at the time, such as “Live P.D.,” which was canceled by A+E Networks after four seasons. The new season of “Cops” will debut with three episodes on Sept. 30, followed by weekly drops on Fridays. In support of the launch, Fox Nation will offer free one-year subscriptions to all first responders, including police officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians and paramedics (EMS personnel)

That singular moment compelled many, including those in the music business, to pledge funds and action. It also gave birth to the Black Music Action Coalition, a collective of Black creators, activists and change-makers who have diligently kept the issue in the headlines and on the minds of corporate parents.  On Sept. 22, the organization — whose leadership includes industry veterans Damien Smith, Caron Veazey and Shawn Holiday, among others — celebrates its second annual Music in Action gala in Beverly Hills, where honorees include Lil Baby, Sony Music Publishing chairman Jon Platt, 300 Elektra Entertainment’s Kevin Liles and 1619 Project creator Nikole Hannah-Jones. It promises to be a gathering of heavies, as last year’s inaugural fete — Variety is a media sponsor — drew the Weeknd, Motown chairwoman Ethiopia Habtemariam and attorney Ben Crump. 

Industry Blackout At some point, every person who works in the music industry has to grapple with the fact that its not-all-that-distant past is rooted in racism and financial exploitation. Capitol Records is no exception. The 80 year-old label’s legacy of Black artists includes Nat King Cole, Tina Turner and George Clinton, but its roster has featured few others throughout its history, right up to the present.  In 2022, the label rolled out FN Meka, a digital rapper so offensive in pulling from the worst stereotypes of how appropriators view our culture, that it single-handedly set back the clock on equality.  The controversy was initially called out by Black music executives and notable figures in the hip-hop community and led our advocacy group, Industry Blackout, to issue a statement addressing the matter directly to Capitol Records. Variety itself reported that sources said the company was already in the process of terminating the deal — however, we take issue with that, as we believe it was our supporters and affiliates that sparked the conversation to begin with.
