TrustNordisk has sold Martin Skovbjerg’s psychological drama “Copenhagen Does Not Exist” to three European territories. The screenplay, based on the novel “Sander” by Terje Holtet Larsen, is written by Eskil Vogt, who was Oscar nominated with Joachim Trier for the original screenplay for “The Worst Person in the World.” “Copenhagen Does Not Exist” had its world premiere in January at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in its Big Screen Competition section. It has been sold to Cinemania Group for the former Yugoslavia, Filmin for Spain and September Film for Benelux.

The Innocents, set in a semi-deserted, nondescript high-rise apartment, follows four lonely kids who find each other as well as mind-bending powers one summer, to lethal effect. The horror pic launched at Cannes last year and arrived Stateside last weekend via IFC Midnight in a limited theatrical plus digital release after playing New Directors/New Films. It’s the latest from Norway’s Eskil Vogt, who until recently was shepherding The Worst Person In The World, which he co-wrote with director Joachim Trier, on its stellar run including Oscar nominations for best original screenplay and best international feature.

When The Worst Person in the World premiered in competition in Cannes this year there was the sense of an arrival, notably in the case of its leading lady, Renate Reinsve, who won the festival’s award for best actress. In actual fact, the film was closer to a destination, being the third part of an unofficial triptych begun by Norwegian director Joachim Trier with his 2006 feature debut Reprise, about two young bohemian writers living in Oslo. He followed it in 2011 with Oslo, August 31st, in which Reprise’s star, Anders Danielsen Lie, by day a successful medical doctor, played a melancholic drug addict and Reinsve made her acting debut with just one line of dialogue (“Let’s go to the party!”).

A sharp and poignant look at how one’s supposedly best years pass by so quickly you barely realize it, The Worst Person in the World is loaded with freshly observed intimate moments that make up the things of life. For about two-thirds of the way, director Joachim Trier and his co-writer Eskil Vogt keep this study of a smart, vibrant young woman alive with inventive scenes brimming with play and sex. The film loses its edge somewhat in the latter stretch with the rather mossy view that it’s basically all over by the time you’re in your thirties, but the sense of life’s fleeting nature is strongly and imaginatively conveyed in this Cannes Film Festival competition entry from Norway.
