Boygenius have performed their entire collection of songs at their latest warm-up show in California.

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic A short film that actor-turned-director Kristen Stewart made with the group Boygenius got an official Hollywood sendoff Thursday night at the El Rey Theatre, with a film premiere that also doubled as a launch party for the indie-rock trio’s new album, “The Record.” Stewart did not participate in the Q&A that Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus did with members of the press and public after the screening, but she stepped out to introduce the short film, which is essentially an interlocking combination of music videos for three songs from the new album: “$20,” “Emily I’m Sorry” and “True Blue.” The imagery is sometimes sentimental, sometimes bracing and vivid. Bridgers sings “Emily I’m Sorry” in front of a monster truck rally. Palms are cut for a blood oath. And there is some lip-locking through copious blue paint. The framing device is sweet, though, beginning with one band member sleeping fitfully in bed and waking up at the end embraced in a group cuddle.

boygenius have released their long-awaited debut album, titled The Record, and to accompany it is a short film (The Film). The 15-minute short is directed by Kristen Stewart, best known for her roles in Spencer and Crimes of the Future. The Film essentially stitches together videos for three The Record songs.

Boygenius have announced an intimate London show and a series of global listening events.The indie trio – comprised of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus – will be hosting the worldwide events in anticipation of their upcoming debut album, ‘The Record’.Taking place next Tuesday (March 28), over 100 independent record stores across the world will present an exclusive preview of Boygenius’ first record for fans. The official release date for the album is set for March 31.

Lucy Dacus has finally given ‘Night Shift’ the visual treatment, five years after it was released.The fan favourite track is lifted from her 2018 album ‘Historian’. Incidentally, its chorus contains a reference to an event happening in five years: “You got a 9 to 5, so I’ll take the night shift / And I’ll never see you again if I can help it / In five years I hope the songs feel like covers / Dedicated to new lovers.”Dacus had previously told NPR that the track song was “the only break-up song she’d even written”, adding: “For a long time I didn’t believe expressing this sort of negativity was productive, but it’s less productive to resist the truth of a situation.

Boygenius have released a brand new song, ‘Not Strong Enough’.The track premiered as Radio 1’s Hottest Record and is the fourth single after ‘$20’, ‘Emily I’m Sorry’ and ‘True Blue’ to be taken from the group’s upcoming debut album, ‘the record’.Lyrically, ‘Not Strong Enough’ deals with the paradox of experiencing self-hatred and masking it with a God complex. The accompanying music video was self-shot by the band – made up of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker – and edited by Bridgers’ brother Jackson.

Boygenius – the trio of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker – have announced their debut UK gigs.The band, who formed for a self-titled EP in 2018 and will release debut album ‘The Record’ next month, will play two UK shows this summer.On August 20, they will play a massive outdoor London show at Gunnersbury Park, joined by MUNA and Ethel Cain, with the latter also playing with them two days later at Halifax’s Piece Hall.Tickets for the gigs go on sale from 10am GMT on Friday, March 3.
