Elliott Smith‘s pre-solo band Heatmiser has announced the forthcoming release of a new rarities compilation.Teaming up with Third Man Records, ‘The Music of Heatmiser’ will feature 29 songs. Heatmiser originally distributed the new compilation as a 6-song cassette at local record stores and shows as a way to promote the band ahead of the release of their debut album, 1993’s ‘Dead Air’.Co-founding singer-guitarist Neil Gust revealed that this compilation came together thanks to the band’s drummer Tony Lash.

Mae Martin has spoken to NME about their upcoming debut album ‘I’m A TV’, being inspired by love of Elliott Smith, and what to expect from new Netflix series Wayward.The brains behind Netflix hit Feel Good, winner of Taskmaster’s 15th season, and acclaimed stand-up, Martin recently announced their debut album ‘I’m A TV’ – sharing the intimate ‘Good Dream’ and the dreamier ‘Stowaway’ as singles last month.“Music feels like a fun thing to do right now,” they told NME. “With stand-up, you have to be really clear about the point you’re making, and there’s something so liberating about being able to write in a more metaphorical, lyrical way.

Steven J. Horowitz Senior Music Writer Zach Bryan is teasing an upcoming film and “one final major label album,” according to a voice note from actor Matthew McConaughey that he posted on social media earlier this morning. In a clip posted to Instagram, Bryan enlists McConaughey to announce the film “Motorbreath,” which he suggests will document Bryan and his friends recording his final album for Warner Records.

Jem Aswad Executive Editor, Music Jackie Farry, an industry veteran who worked closely with Nirvana — becoming Frances Bean Cobain’s first nanny — and then was tour manager for Elliott Smith, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the Lemonheads and others, died Sunday of complications from a lung disease. Farry, who had battled cancer for more than 20 years, was 58.

Soccer Mommy and Phoebe Bridgers have performed a live cover of an Elliott Smith track – you can watch the performance below.Earlier this week (June 4), Soccer Mommy performed at the Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever in Los Angeles, California. During the set, she brought out a surprise guest in Phoebe Bridgers, who walked onstage to raucous applause.After a short embrace, the two musicians performed a cover of Elliott Smith’s ‘The Biggest Lie’.

Elliott Smith in high school between 1985 and 1989 have surfaced online.The albums feature Smith and the friends he was in bands with as a teenager, playing under names including Stranger Than Fiction, A Murder Of Crows, and Harum Scarum.The six newly-surfaced records were obtained and distributed by a fan of Smith’s from Texas called Cameron McCrary. The fan contacted local record stores in Portland, where Smith spent much of his life, and hunted on Discogs to find the albums.

Phoebe Bridgers has written a heartfelt essay for the 10th anniversary edition of Bon Iver‘s second album, ‘Bon Iver, Bon Iver’.Justin Vernon’s critically acclaimed LP, which featured the singles ‘Calgary’, ‘Holocene’, ‘Towers’ and ‘Beth/Rest’, was released in June 2011.To celebrate the anniversary, an expanded vinyl reissue of ‘Bon Iver, Bon Iver’ has now been released featuring five songs from Vernon and S. Slowthai has delivered his own take on Elliott Smith’s ‘Needle in the Hay’.A largely faithful take on the late musician’s 1995 track, the Apple Music Home Session cover sees the Northampton rapper ditching his typically explosive delivery to instead offer a stripped-back vocal – in keeping with the spirit of Smith’s original.Describing his choice of cover, as well as his performance of his own track ‘adhd’, Slowthai said: “The lyrics to both tracks mean a lot to me.“‘adhd’ because I feel it’s inward-facing and ‘Needle in the Hay’ because that song got me through a lot of down days.”You can listen to the track in full here.It comes after Slowthai released his second album ‘Tyron’ last Friday (February 12), which is currently leading the race

Weezer released their latest album ‘OK Human’ last month, and Rivers Cuomo says they already have plans for four more albums.The quartet of records in the pipeline are set to correspond to the four seasons, with one album inspired by Elliott Smith.Speaking to Apple Music on the Strombo Show, Cuomo revealed that the band are already piecing together the sounds they want to create for the four albums.“The next idea is a four album set, where each album corresponds to one of the four seasons.

Elliott Smith‘s self-titled debut album has been released today (August 28).Alongside a remastered version of the full album, the new reissue also contains a live album called ‘Live At Umbra Penumbra’.Recorded on September 17, 1994, the show at the titular Portland cafe, is said to be the earliest recorded solo acoustic show of Smith’s.Speaking of the show in question, Smith’s family archivist Larry Crane says: “There are fan-traded MP3s out there of this show.

Autumn de Wilde was an aspiring photographer in L.A. when, in 2000, her friend asked her to direct a video for one of his songs. She wasn’t sure if she was up to the task, but he insisted. That friend was Elliott Smith. “I was really moved that he believed in me,” de Wilde recalls. “I had started storytelling with my photography, I just didn’t quite realize it yet.” Her homespun visual for the Figure 8 track “Son of Sam”—along with that album’s now-iconic cover photo—kicked off her illustrious career.
