Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins will direct Zendaya in the biopic Be My Baby, about the life of music legend Ronnie Spector.The lead singer of The Ronettes passed away January 12 2022, following a battle with cancer. The singer’s legacy was felt for generations, with everyone from The Ramones to Amy Winehouse citing her as an influence.Zendaya has been in talks with A24 for years planning the biopic, but today (March 26) Deadline revealed that Jenkins, best known for his Best Picture winner Moonlight and the recent Mufasa: The Lion King, now on board as director.The article reads: “According to sources, the star and Jenkins, who’d been looking to work together for some time, agreed on a version of Spector’s story that could immerse audiences in what the singer’s life with the troubled producer Phil Spector felt like rather than a traditional cradle to the grave biopic”.David Kajganich, the writer of films Suspiria and Bones And All, will write an original screenplay drawing from Spector’s memoir, also titled Be My Baby.

Romance and cannibalism might seem like an unlikely pairing, but that’s exactly why Bones and All screenwriter David Kajganich thought that only director Luca Guadagnino could do justice to his script, which he adapted from Camille DeAngelis’ 2015 novel. 

“I didn’t read the script as a horror script,” says Oscar nominated filmmaker Luca Guadagnino about his 1980s-set cannibal love story, Bones and All.

We edited the movie and we almost actually don’t use any of her double. She’s so good.” The film, which Guadagnino described as a “sexy comedy,” follows Zendaya’s character as a love triangle develops while coaches her player-husband (“West Side Story” actor Mike Faist) for his big match against her ex and his childhood best friend, played by Josh O’Connor (“The Crown”).

Many years ago, probably around the time when we were shooting ‘Call Me by Your Name’,” he said during his masterclass when asked about the recent “cannibal” scandal. “It was to be directed by my great colleague Antonio Campos, but he decided not to go for it. That’s when they gave me the script. Any correlation with this kind of innuendo and silliness is preposterous.”

Timothee Chalamet had all of Venice seeing red on Friday night at the world premiere of “Bones & All.” The actor donned a sparkling red pantsuit (with no back above the waist) in the shade of blood, a cheeky wink to the drama’s central protagonists — two cannibals in love.The drama, which reteams Chalamet with his “Call Me By Your Name” director Luca Guadagnino, lives up to its title with gory attacks and scenes that involve limb chewing and eating. But despite the uncomfortable subject matter, the audience at the Venice premiere for the movie devoured “Bones & All.” The film received a 8.5-minute standing ovation, the longest and most enthusiastic of the festival so far. (It handily beat the previous record holder “Tar,” a drama starring Cate Blanchett as a tortured composer.)

Judgment was a big topic at the press conference for Luca Guadagnino’s Venice Film Festival competition entry Bones And All this afternoon. Star Timothée Chalamet, returning to the Lido after last year’s triumphant world premiere of Dune, sounded a gloomy outlook when asked his thoughts on the plight of young people today and their experiences with being judged for their choices, particularly in the age of social media.

Taking his cue from the fact that the story is set in the ’80s, when social media did not exist, Chalamet went on an anti-social media tirade. “I think true to that sentiment. To be young today…I can’t imagine what it is to grow up without the onslaught of social media,” he said. “And at least here [in ‘Bones’] there are characters wrestling with internal blood lines vis-a-vis [struggling with] growing up with Instagram or Twitter; trying to figure out where they fit in with that.”

Luca Guadagnino has only just moved into the historic house in Piedmont, Italy that he bought some four years ago. What he hoped would be a pain-free renovation project was compounded by issues with the foundation that prolonged the work. And while he’s satisfied with the fit and finish, all meticulously directed by him (Guadagnino has his own interior design firm), it is still bare of furniture, there’s no internet, and cellphone service is only possible from one spot on the terrace… in a favorable wind. Upstairs, a stunning home theater has been fully kitted-out save for the HDMI cables required to pass a picture through the projector, and most of his DVDs and Blu-rays have yet to be unpacked, but he has wasted no time in setting up an editing suite in which he is making much swifter progress on Challengers, a film starring Zendaya and Josh O’Connor that the rest of us won’t see for another year.
