Oral hygiene is an important part of a daily routine and people are recommended to brush their teeth twice a day - but what are the facts around using mouthwash?Mouthwash can be an important step for those who want healthy teeth and gums, and it can be used after brushing to keep your mouth feeling fresh.
However, some people may notice a burning sensation in their mouth while using the cleaning solution. One dentist has revealed exactly why this sensation takes place - and it may do damage to your health, reports the Mirror.Dr Deepa Vakil, Lead Dentist and Clinical Director of Yor Dental, has said that dealing with 30 seconds of burning or stinging when using mouthwash could be a sign that you need to use something else to clean your teeth. The dentist told the Huffington Post: "Mouthwash can be detrimental to oral health for a few reasons.
Some contain alcohol, which can dry out the mouth and reduce saliva production, leading to bad breath and a higher risk of cavities." Dr Vakil warned that harsh ingredients like alcohol can also irritate the gums and could lead to inflammation or damage to your mouth over a prolonged period of time. The dentist also noted that mouthwash can "disrupt" the natural oral microbiome balance which is "essential for keeping harmful bacteria in check".
She advised those who are dealing with the painful sensation to choose a mouthwash without alcohol that has some "gentler ingredients".It isn't just alcohol content in mouthwash that could be causing the burning sensation, according to the dentist.
