Pensioner caused devastation after hitting tourist with car at shopping centre

A tourist visiting Liverpool city centre was hit with a car by a pensioner and was left fighting for her life. Retired HGV driver Michael Jones was shopping for A5 writing paper for his wife before he hit his car's accelerator instead of the break at St Johns Shopping Centre.The pensioner was attempting to execute a three-point turn ahead of his journey home before horror struck.

The 'profoundly deaf' 80-year-old's behicle flew backwards and over unsuspecting pedestrian Maria Oginska before crashing into the Royal Court Theatre, leaving her trapped undernearth with horror injuries, reports the ECHO.Paramedics frantically performed CPR ont he dentist whilst her shattered cousin, whom she had been visiting from her native Poland, "looked on in horror" and fearing that her family member had died at the scene.Liverpool Crown Court heard on Wednesday, that Jones, of Sandown Avenue in Roby, parked his Seat Ateca on double yellow lines on Queen Square while he shopped at Ryman's in St Johns Shopping Centre on October 29 2023.

He returned to his car, which he had left in a loading bay and began to manoeuvre his car back towards Roe Street.Peter Hussey, prosecuting, described how Mrs Oginska had been walking nearby with her cousin Magorzata Kowalska and the latter's husband Norbert Kowalski, whom she had been staying with on holiday at their home in Deeside, North Wales, at the same time.

He told the court: "The defendant obviously hit the accelerator pedal very hard, because [his car] moved very rapidly."This caused Jones's car to plough through a set of bollards and into a pedestrianised area.
