Bruno Miguel Borges Fernandes (born 8 September 1994) is a Portuguese footballer who plays for Primeira Liga club Sporting CP and the Portugal national team as a midfielder. Fernandes started his career at Serie B side Novara Calcio and soon featured for Udinese and Sampdoria in Serie A.
In 2017, he signed with Sporting CP where he established himself as one of the best players in the Primeira Liga. He was named the LPFP Primeira Liga Player of the Year in both 2017–18 and 2018–19. In the latter season, he also helped Sporting win the Taça de Portugal. A senior international since 2017, Fernandes represented Portugal at the 2016 Summer Olympics and 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Paul Pogba’s Manchester United career has been plagued by inconsistency. The French World Cup winner has been shifted around several midfield roles and struggled to nail down his place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-choice side.
The arrival of Bruno Fernandes whilst Pogba was sidelined through injury at the start of 2020 posed a new challenge. It was reported that Pogba “hated” the deeper role he was initially deployed in when Fernandes arrived.
He disagreed with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over his position in the side and his performances reflected his frustrations. Pogba has never made any secret of his favoured role. “I would say midfielder on the left [is my best position],” he told Sky Sports back in 2016 when he rejoined the Red Devils.
