Paisley pupils go green for fun eco week

Pupils planted trees and wildflowers, made bug houses, went on litter picks and explored the Gleniffer Braes as part of a fun eco week.Langcraigs Primary School received 35 trees from the Woodland Trust to transform their outdoor area and give them shade.And when the trees arrived the school decided to dedicate a week to exploring the great outdoors with every class taking part.Don't miss the latest headlines from around Renfrewshire.

Sign up to our newsletters here.Teacher Mitch Murphy said: “Last summer we were outside a lot and our outdoor area is right beside the bus turning circle.“It’s where the pupils take their outdoor lunches and our outdoor classroom so we thought about how we could improve it.“Our eco committee applied for 35 trees from the Woodland Trust, things like dogwood, hawthorn and crab apple that will flower and give shade.“We also planted wildflower seeds, made hedgehog houses, held litter picks in the school grounds and in the community with the help of parishioners from St George’s Church, and put birdfeeders outside the classrooms.“Every class also went on a trip up the Braes and the rangers there were fantastic.

They went tree spotting and did a fungi hunt. We also went to the Linns and talked about the cars that have recently been taken out of the water up there.”The P4-7 classes watched live lessons from Keep Scotland Beautiful which inspired children to tackle litter in their playground.Mitch added: “They’ve implemented what they watched.

Some children did a litter audit to see how much litter was in the playground. They’ve also come up with the idea of a crisp recycling bin next to the litter bins.“Some children did a read and snack so they stopped for a break 10 minutes before playtime and
