A Saltcoats councillor has jumped to the defence of the town after it was branded a 'hellhole' on a website reviewing the worst places to live in the UK.
Jim Montgomerie said the infamous listing on popular satirical site ILiveHere – which also slated Saltcoats as a 'chavtown' – did not paint an accurate picture of the North Ayrshire seaside spot.An anonymous poster, describing themselves as a resident, claimed the town smelled of raw sewage, described an array of unsavoury 'knuckle-dragging' local characters including a 'troglodyte' with a Burberry cap, and claimed to be witness to five fights in three bars in the space of one evening.The review signed off by saying: "Saltcoats, although just a small town, is by far the worst chavtown I have encountered.
If there is anyone thinking of moving to this hellhole, I would urge them to reconsider."But local Labour councillor Montgomerie this week blasted the review as complete nonsense and suggested it was the work of an internet troll.
He told Ayrshire Live: "I was born and bred in Saltcoats and I love it. "Yes, it has its problems like any other town but nothing like this ridiculous review which I'm led to believe was actually written many years ago and has appeared on other sites.“It talks about Burberry caps but come on, that was back in my day."And five fights in three pubs?
