Bruno Miguel Borges Fernandes (born 8 September 1994) is a Portuguese footballer who plays for Primeira Liga club Sporting CP and the Portugal national team as a midfielder. Fernandes started his career at Serie B side Novara Calcio and soon featured for Udinese and Sampdoria in Serie A.
In 2017, he signed with Sporting CP where he established himself as one of the best players in the Primeira Liga. He was named the LPFP Primeira Liga Player of the Year in both 2017–18 and 2018–19. In the latter season, he also helped Sporting win the Taça de Portugal. A senior international since 2017, Fernandes represented Portugal at the 2016 Summer Olympics and 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Since Manchester United signed Donny van de Beek from Ajax in the summer of 2020, the Dutch midfielder has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford.
Above all, the 24-year-old has encountered problems when it comes to getting on the pitch and being presented with opportunities to showcase his quality.
Throughout his 18 months in Manchester, Van De Beek has started just four Premier League matches. He's featured in a further 23 league games as a substitute over that period but ultimately, Bruno Fernandes is the player who has restricted his usage due to his hold over United's no.10 spot.
The Portuguese midfielder has been a consistent presence since his arrival from Sporting CP - posting 57 goals and assists in the Premier League - but his constant availability has prevented Van De Beek from accumulating minutes on the field in his favoured position.
