A new Indian restaurant in the city centre is now allowed to offer alcoholic beverages to its customers. Sthan, which offers authentic Indian cuisine, drew concern from one resident who thought the bid for late night alcohol sales could produce unwanted levels of noise and smell to its upstairs neighbours.
The restaurant, situated in a basement off Princess Street, originally applied for a licence to sell booze until 11.30pm on weekdays and 2am on weekends - with the option to be open until 4am on the Sundays of bank holidays and New Year’s Eve.
But Dr Thomas Williams, a resident living in one of the apartments above, believed this could lead to disorderly behaviour, a heightened risk of violence for residents coming in or out of the building, smoking from customers and increased litter. His licensing agent, Tony Clarke, refuted the notion that this was anything other than a ‘family restaurant’ - rather than a nightclub or bar.
