New garden at the heart of Paisley community will help fight isolation

A Paisley housing scheme is growing places after a new garden has been created at the heart of the community.Residents of the Charleston high flats have long campaigned for a community centre or a place for people to gather.And now they’ve got a fantastic community garden in the heart of the houses with accessible space, free fruit and veg and plenty of seating for people of all ages to enjoy.Dot Finlay, chair of Charleston Tenants and Residents Association said she was delighted to finally have somewhere for the community to gather.Don't miss the latest headlines from around Renfrewshire.

Sign up to our newsletters here.“We’ve not got a community centre or anything like that here and during the pandemic a lot of folk were very lonely,” she said.“There’s a wee room in Union Court but we’re lucky if it holds 15 people.

We’re trying to get a community centre. I’ve been here since I was five and I’m 61 now, there’s nothing for the community.“We’re hoping to get an office space done up to use for groups.“We hope the garden will be a focus for the community here during the better weather.

People can go in and sit and enjoy it.“We’re getting a picnic table and have recycled an old desk.“I can’t wait to have it open and for everyone to enjoy it.”The association received a £10,000 grant from Renfrewshire Council’s green spaces, parks and play area fund last year.Work began in September 2021 and there are now six large growing beds which are fully accessible.Dot said: “It was all just weeds and slabs.
