Scores of dead puffins that washed up on the tideline in Orkney have prompted wildlife experts to raise concerns about the much-loved seabirds.
Puffins, which are usually found in great number in the isles, have been spotted either dead or gravely ill which has caused great alarm to local vets.
Experts investigating the mystery do not yet know why the birds are dying but they believe it is unlikely to be avian flu, which is currently affecting birds across the UK.
Local vet practice Flett and Carmichael have been treating the birds which are found “barely alive”. Leah Hunter, a vet from the Kirkwall, revealed the birds handed into them have been “very weak”, with some requiring rehydration fluids to help keep them alive.
