You can check your own name has fared in popularity since 1904 on the ONS website. This year, the most popular UK baby names - published by the website BabyCentre - show which names remain perennial favourites, and others that have slipped further down the popularity rankings.
Professor Richard Coates, a linguist who has a special interest in the subject, said: "Previously people would choose a 'good solid name' that had the approval of many because many other people had chosen it. "But the social effect has been that the name has become a bit common and the assumption is the person will be common.
