More than half of the sewage leaks in Scottish hospitals over the past years occurred at Lanarkshire's Monklands Hospital. Data released by NHS Lanarkshire revealed that the Airdrie medical facility was affected by 105 sewage leaks during that time, mainly due to “ageing pipework” and an often faulty drainage system.Across the country there were 196 sewage-related incidents recorded since 2019.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

Monklands' MSPs responded to the figures with concern, with Coatbridge representative Fulton MacGregor saying "urgent renovations and improvements are needed" and his Airdrie counterpart Neil Gray highlighting how this "underlines" the need for the new £400m modern replacement Monklands Hospital due to be built at Wester Moffat.
