As energy prices continue to rise, millions of homeowners could save up to £390 a year on their energy bills by making an upgrade to their property.
Experts analysing 21 million homes across England and Wales found that 58 per cent of them only meet insulation standards of 1976 or older, which can prove costly to homeowners.
As a result of having insulation as old as 40 years, properties lose an increased amount of heat through wall cavity insulation, double glazing, loft insulation and floor insulation, which can end up costing them up to £930 a year.
Around 1.6 million properties reportedly have an insulation age of 2002 or younger, and 4,663 have an insulation age of 2013.
