The government is set to spend £2billion on a series of upgrades to Britain's roads and railways, in a move that will "fill millions of dangerous potholes".

UK transport secretary Grant Shapps made the announcement while speaking to the nation at the government's No.10 Downing Street coronavirus press conference this afternoon.

The upgrades will lead to "smoother and safer journeys" as the UK recovers from the coronavirus pandemic, Mr Shapps has claimed.

He said hundreds of millions of pounds has already been spent on upgrades to road and rail networks during the lockdown, and more work is planned over the coming months.
