direct to your inboxIt was built in 1877 as an inspired way of giving vulnerable children a home.Instead of one institutional building, the Victorians created Harris Park Orphanage.In a style evolved by the famous Dr Barnardo it broke the mould and was a cluster of cottage houses with a village green and extensive grounds for recreation.Boys and girls were housed separately in bright red brick houses with mullioned windows.Based in Fulwood, Lancashire, it closed in 1982 but was leased first to Preston Polytechnic and later the University of Central Lancashire.It sits in a conservation area and contains 14 Grade II listed buildings.But a multi-millionaire is proposing to create a housing estate within its grounds.Save Britain's Heritage say.
