Tiny pieces of plastic that make their way into human bodies could become lodged in the brain and form deadly clots, new research suggests.

A group of scientists found that microplastics – tiny plastic pieces less than five millimeters long – are small enough to enter the brain and have devastating effects.

Researchers gave microplastics to mice and found that they act like blood clots, restricting the flow of blood in their brains and hampering their mobility for a few days.

Reduced blood flow to the brain is a known cause of vascular dementia. Although the team did not look at this specifically, their findings spark concern about the harms of microplastics.
