Michael Steinwender was hoping to present his dad with a Gorgie gift to mark the old fella’s birthday.But the new Hearts recruit admits a defeat to Rangers spoiled the party on his Tynecastle debut.

The former Austrian youth international joined Neil Critchely’s Jambos outfit last month from Swedish side Varnamo.The big defender registered his first two appearances in a maroon jersey last week as helped Hearts pick up back-to-back wins on the road at Dundee and St Mirren.

And he was aiming for another double celebration against Gers as he ran out at home for the first time a day after marking his father’s latest milestone during a family get-together in the capital.It looked like the festivities were set to continue when Steinwender bagged his first goal for his new side with his parents watching, nodding home the equaliser just four minutes into the second half.

But the mood fell flat when Hearts allowed the under-fire Ibrox side to hit back and steal the points with a 3-1 victory.The 24-year-old said: "Of course it's a nice feeling to score.
