The latest Met Office weather maps suggest a 250-mile stretch of the UK could be hit by snow within a matter of days. Forecasters have issued a yellow ice and snow warning for parts of northern England and southern Scotland on Monday and Tuesday, with up to 20cm of snow possible on higher ground.

Temperatures will drop as a northerly airflow develops, bringing in colder Arctic air. This introduces the possibility of snow, initially over high ground in the north from Sunday, with gusty winds also a potential hazard." The Met Office precipitation map for Monday evening shows snow covering a 250-mile stretch of the north of the UK, from the Peak District all the way up to the Scottish Highlands, with up to 4mm of snow per hour expected across most of the area.
By 9pm, some areas of the north west of England, including Ambleside in Cumbria, could see more than 4mm per hour. For northern Scotland and south Yorkshire, the snow looks set to subside overnight, but some areas in the north west of England could see the snow continue into Tuesday morning.
