Menthol cigarettes are being banned across the UK and the EU from today (WED) in a bid to discourage younger people from taking up smoking and improve public health.The ban will also cover “capsule cigarettes”, launched in 2007, which allow users to depress a capsule in the tip of the cigarette to release a different flavour.They were the fastest growing part of the global cigarette market, selling an estimated 150 billion cigarettes in 2017 alone.The ban marks a significant victory for health campaigners who fear that the cigarettes were acting a gateway to take up smoking for young people.There have also been claims that menthol cigarettes were aimed at the female market.Evidence from here in Scotland reveals that young smokers viewed
