Meghan Markle 'struggled with royal life' thanks to family's decades-old rule

But, on becoming a member of the British Royal Family after marrying Prince Harry at Windsor Castle in 2018, she began to struggle with having to remain silent - even in the face of intense public scrutiny.
Members of The Firm tend to adhere to the Queen Mother’s mantra of "never complain, never explain", and that caused Meghan some difficulties, according to royal commentator Victoria Arbiter.
Speaking to Nine News Australia in 2019, she said: "It's very difficult when you come from a celebrity background where a publicist can stand up for you or come out and say 'no, that report is categorically untrue’. "But, generally speaking, members of the family follow the Queen Mother's well-worn mantra: 'Never complain, never explain.' And so you have to sit back while the world's media and social media just comment." Meghan and Prince Harry, 38, stepped back from senior royal duties in 2020 after struggling to cope with life in The Firm - eventually settling in Montecito,California.
