Last summer, a time punctuated by grief, loss and very few outings, my fiancé and I binge-watched every series of Love Island — the part game, part fly-on-the-wall reality show that sends a group of singletons to an island, where they must couple up and prove their connection is genuine or face being dumped by public vote.
The overriding theme of joy and anguish while falling in and out of lust respectively, provided much-needed escapism in lockdown.
And while we ended up invested in the love lives of many contestants, it was 30-year-old model Maura Higgins from Longford who had us hook, line and sinker with her signature Ballymahon brogue and no-nonsense charm.
