Martin Lewis explains confusion behind 'two-child benefits cap' as Labour MPs rebel

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer faced down the first major rebellion of his premiership on Tuesday, when he sacked seven Labour MPs for defying the whip and backing an SNP amendment seeking to end the 'cruel' two-child limit on benefits.

However, in the midst of all the politicking, there has been some confusion about which child-related benefits are being spoken about.

Although many have used the term "two-child benefit cap" as a shorthand for a Conservative George Osborne-era policy that prevents some of the hardest-off families getting extra financial help from the benefits system if they have more than two children.

But the Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has warned that this terminology is unhelpful and confusing. Speaking to his followers, Martin Lewis asked: "Are you confused about the difference between the child benefit rules, the two-child benefit limit, and the benefit cap?
