Money-saving maestro Martin Lewis has dished out his 'bedroom rule' to help homeowners combat the steep increase in water bills. The personal finance whizz shared his tips on ITV's This Morning, explaining that a simple switch based on the number of people in a household could lead to saving an impressive £700.
He highlighted the issue because water bills are set to soar by an "extortionate" average of £86 this year alone. Water watchdog Ofwat has given providers the green light to hike average bills by 36%, or £157, over the next five years—reaching £597 by 2030—to bankroll a £104 billion modernisation of the network.
Some companies are permitted even heftier rises, with Southern Water customers bracing for a 53% surge and Severn Trent users facing a 47% bump, even before factoring in inflation.
While the yearly average rise is £31, April brings a particularly sharp sting, with an average hike of £86, or a 20% leap, taking the brunt of the blow for the upcoming year.
