The former Swansea winger has been deprived of regular game time this season for United but impressed in the 4-0 win over Real Sociedad, rounding off the scoring late on.
It means James has now scored in four of his past seven appearances for United — matching his tally for last season, but in far fewer games.
And Solskjaer insisted the 23-year-old is a firm part of his plans at Old Trafford, with James possibly giving the Norwegian a problem with an energetic and direct display in the Europa League victory over Sociedad.
