Gareth Southgate is playing for time - but it is fast running out. The England boss ripped up his plans last night when Harry Maguire was named in Manchester United’s squad for the Europa League final.
He wants to wait and see if his key defender plays, and comes through, Wednesday’s test against Villarreal in Gdansk.So he abandoned plans to name a final 26-man squad for the Euros on Tuesday and put an additional handful of mostly young players on standby.Instead, he will name a bigger provisional squad that will be trimmed down before the June 1 deadline.In other words, Southgate has put off all the big decisions.
