The victim was attacked near Liverpool Road in Castlefield shortly before 5.15pm on Tuesday. The man is understood to have been stabbed with a screwdriver in his back and shoulder.
Police say he was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition. No one has been arrested and police enquiries are ongoing.
