A warning has been issued after a man risked his life by going inside an electricity substation in Stockport to try and rescue a cat.

Electricity North West said engineers were called out to the substation on Banks Lane in Offerton last month after the feline was seen on the substation's roof.

They said when they arrived, a man had got inside with a set of ladders and was trying to get on the roof. "The resident, who was trespassing and risking his life, was asked to leave immediately and reminded of the dangers of being close to powerful electrical assets," the company said. "The cat left of its own accord" they added.

They have now issued a public appeal in a bid to prevent it from happening again. Paul Killilea, Asset and Investment Director, said: “Each year, we receive hundreds of requests for us to retrieve balls, Frisbees and other things that have landed in the grounds of substations READ MORE: 'It was absolute madness': Neighbours recall moment car ploughed into house leaving man, 20, seriously injured “It is never a problem for our teams to do that and we encourage people to call us rather than illegally enter our substations themselves.
