The A662 Ashton New Road was closed in Clayton following a collision at about 9am. Pictures from the scene showed a severely damaged Seat Ibiza in the centre of the carriageway, close to The Grove Inn.
Some clothes and a rucksack could also be seen in the road. Witnesses said the front end of the car had suffered extensive damage.
Police were at the scene and the road was cordoned off as an investigation was launched. Transport for Greater Manchester tweeted that Ashton New Road had been closed in both directions between North Road and Canberra Street following a 'road traffic
