Major chaos on film sets – stars hospitalised, near-fatal accidents, death on sets

The film is infamous for cutting costs by having the actors perform their own stunts instead of doubles. One scene had Burt Reynolds tumbling down a waterfall, where he recalled his shoulders and heat hitting rocks which resulted in him cracking his tailbone.

His co-star Ned Beatty almost drowned. But this is not the only tale of troubled film-making…It might be known as a kids’ classic now, but filming the 1939 movie was anything but magical.It had five different directors which included Norman Taurog and Richard Thorpe, before Gone With The Wind directors, George Cukor and then Victor Flemming saved the production.Once Flemming was hastily called to the set of Gone with the Wind, his friend King Vidor was assigned to finish the films last scenes which included the sepia-toned Kansas scenes and the famous Over the Rainbow sequence.The original Tin Man, Buddy Ebsen, had to quit after he ended up hospitalised with an allergic reaction to the aluminium powder make-up he wore.Margaret Hamilton also sustained injuries on the set as she suffered serious burns playing The Wicked Witch of the West, when her broom and hat caught fire in an early explosion, while her skin was stained green by toxic makeup.There were also claims some of the actors playing the Munchkins had drunken orgies and even groped child star Judy Garland, who played Dorothy.Costing a whopping £145million to make, Kevin Costner’s post-apocalyptic blockbuster from 1995 was then the most expensive film ever made.But it suffered a spate of production woes.
