A key suspect in the Madeleine McCann case was reportedly convicted of raping a 72-year-old American tourist at knifepoint while in Portugal.
The crime occurred in Praia da Luz two years before Maddie vanished. The 43-year old German prisoner and convicted child sex offender was identified as suspect in the high-profile missing person's case on Wednesday.
Three-year-old Maddie vanished on May 3 2007, from a room where she slept with two twin brothers, in an apartment of a resort in Praia da Luz in the Algarve.
The man, who has not been named, is white with short blond hair, possibly fair, and about 6ft tall with a slim build at the time she vanished on May 3 2007.
