A paedophile suspected of abducting and murdering Madeleine McCann could be freed from prison within weeks as he seeks parole and challenges a rape conviction.
Christian Brueckner has submitted a fresh application for early release on a drug conviction and Germany's courts are now trying to decide who has jurisdiction over his case.
German prosecutors who are investigating him in the McCann case have vowed he will not be back on the streets, however. Brueckner, 43, is in prison in Kiel after being sentenced to 15 months for drug trafficking in Germany and seven years for raping a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz, Portugal - the resort where three-year-old Madeleine vanished in 2007.
